The new ‘country manager’ in Venezuela brings extensive banking experience. Alonso joined BBVA 29 years ago and since then has worked in several business areas, holding positions of responsibility. In Corporate & Investment Banking, BBVA’s wholesale banking business, he was director of the Belgian unit. In retail banking in Spain, he was director of the Canary Islands region, and head of the Central region, (an area which includes Madrid and Castille-La Mancha). Since 2016 and until now Alonso was head of commercial banking at BBVA Spain and director of the bank’s European Banking network, focusing on globalization, transformation and corporate sustainability.
Furthermore, Agustín Antón has had a professional career of more than 36 years at BBVA, working in five countries (Spain, United States, Colombia, Paraguay and twice in Venezuela). During his last stint, he was head of the BBVA unit in Paraguay (2014-2017) and more recently in Venezuela, a position he took in early 2018. “The country I leave behind brings my career to a close. After 14 years in Venezuela, I too consider myself a Venezuelan. I have learned to enjoy its natural beauty, climate, wonderful people and above all, a human team that makes BBVA Provincial the leading bank in the country,” said Antón.
“Agustín is a clear example of the Group’s values, and his personal and professional qualities have made him a role model for all of us. BBVA’s evolution in Latin America would be impossible to understand without him. His excellent work at BBVA Provincial has led us to maintain a leading position in banking,” BBVA Global Head of Country Monitoring Jorge Sáenz-Azcúnaga said. “Fernando is an executive with extensive experience. Without a doubt, with his leadership we will maintain the excellent management of the bank while continuing to contribute to the development of Venezuelan society,” he added.
